Facilitating clinical reasoning via alternative teaching in clinical education

ACAPT's National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) engages academic and clinical educators through partnerships to advance excellence and innovation in physical therapist education. NCCE membership is made up of one academic partner and one clinical partner from each ACAPT member institution. If you haven’t already done so, your academic program can join NCCE for free by registering your institution pair.

This inaugural NCCE resource-sharing webinar features tools for alternative learning experiences during those times that DPT students are not involved in direct patient care. The webinar highlights NCCE member institution, University of Montana, and focuses on resources that facilitate clinical reasoning.

Presenters

  • Dr. Jaclyn Carson, NCCE clinical member, provides a multi-step case study that has versatility in student level and clinical instructor involvement. It is designed to engage students in identifying their thought process through clinical reasoning and decision-making.
  • Dr. Jennifer Bell, NCCE academic member, shares a Diagnostic Clinical Reasoning Worksheet that helps students prepare for an examination, identify a clinical presentation pattern and determine appropriate tests to confirm or refute a diagnosis. It also guides the CI’s discussion with the student before, during, and after the evaluation.
